July 12 Saints Veronica of the Veil, John Walbert (Giovanni Gualberto), Andrew Oexner of Rinne, Martyr, Lucius of Cavargna, Martyr, & others.
St. Veronica was a Jewess with the Greek name Beronika, or Berenice, as it is most usually transcribed into English. She was present at the Way of the Cross, when our Lord God Jesus Christ, in His human form, was led, carrying His cross, from the Fortress of Antonia in Jerusalem, to Golgatha, where He was crucified, murdered. She wiped His bloodied face with her veil, on which His face was found imprinted, it is the relic called the Veil of St. Veronica.
St. John Walbert was an Italian noble. After his only brother Hugh was murdered, he, & his friends, searched out for the murderer, to kill him in retaliation. Finding the murderer in a narrow lane on Good Friday, he spread his hands in the form of the cross, reminding John that that day was the day of Jesus' murder, & begging for forgiveness. Struck by the grace of God, John forgave him. Later, while praying in Church, he say Jesus on the Cross bow to him to thank him for forgiving his brother's murderer. Against his father's opposition, John joined the Benedictines as a monk, but found his bishop & abbots were Simoniacs, & after denouncing this, & suffering their persecution, he withdrew to live as a hermit, later founding the reformed & austere Benedictine Vallumbrosan order, named for the first monastery he founded.
St. Andrew Oexner, also called Anderl, or "Little Andrew," was the son of Simon & Mary Oexner. Orphaned by the death of his father, his mother entrusted him to his uncle John Mayer, a tavern keeper or petty merchant, who she seems to have remarried, & who confessed that he sold him to the Jews, fatigued by his "nuisance." Tortured & murdered, July 12, 1462, by Jews, at age of between 2 & 3 years, at "Der Judenstein," Rinn, or Rinne, Tyrol, Austria. Equipollently beatified by Pope Benedict XIV, Dec. 25, 1752, at the request of the Bishop of Brixen, & the Norbertines of Wilten.
St. Lucius of Cavargna, also colloquially called Lucio, Luigi, Lugguzone, Ugguzone, etc., was a poor but devout peasant youth who was hired out to a pastoralist. After processing the milk from sheep, goats & cattle, & after processing cheese, he was given the waste remaining as his wages, from which he invented a process of preparing Ricotta (recotta), which he would then distribute among the poorest people. This angered his employer, who cursed him & drove him away, claiming that he was thus "robbing" him. Another, more benevolent, pastoralist employed him, & was thereafter blessed by increases in his flocks & wealth, while his miserly previous employer equally progressively sank into poverty & want, which evoked envy & jealousy in him, who then sought him out in the mountain pastures of the Cavargna & Colla valleys, in Lombardy, above Lake Como, & murdered him on a ridge separating the two valleys, where a small lake sprung, & the waters of which turn red on the feast of his martyrdom, July 12. The village, & monastery of San Lucio sprung up at this location which is now close to the border of Italy with the Italian community of Ticino in Switzerland. He is the patron saint of cheese & recotta makers, of sellers of brassware as brass pots were used to process cheese & recotta, & of sellers of cured meats & of delicatessens, as sellers of cheeses & recotta early branched into selling cured meats.
